Keep oranges
Oranges are best kept in a dark and cool place. There should be enough air to circulate and it should be dry. Moisture damages the orange, it could get moldy quickly.
Oranges in a closed plastic bag can also be kept for about four weeks in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.

Freeze oranges in different ways
If you want to store a large number of oranges, you should freeze some of the fruit. Oranges can
- in individual carvings,
- in slices,
- in the form of juice or
- in syrup
be frozen.
The freezing of carvings
- Wash the oranges under running water and dry them carefully.
- Peel the oranges with a sharp knife.
- Also remove the white outer skin.
- Now cut deeply along the delicate inner skin with the sharp knife.
- Carefully remove the fillets.
The individual fillets can now be frozen. To prevent them from sticking together, pre-freeze them on a tray and first put the well-frozen pieces in a suitable freezer container.
Freeze fruit slices or fruit juice
Orange slices are frozen in a similar way to the fillets. After washing, cut the peeled fruit into slices and freeze them on a tray. Then store the frozen slices in freezer cans.
For the fruit juice, squeeze orange juice into suitable containers and place them in the freezer. It is practical to freeze the juice in ice cube trays.
Freeze orange fillets in syrup
- Make a syrup using 3 1/4 cups of sugar and 5 cups of warm water.
- Peel the fruit and remove the fillets.
- Place the fillets in suitable freezer jars or glass containers.
- Pour syrup over the orange fillets so that they are covered.
- Seal the cans or jars, mark them with the current date and put them in your freezer.
Continue to use frozen oranges
Once the oranges have thawed, they have a relatively soft consistency. However, this is irrelevant when preparing desserts with cream or yoghurt. The thawed oranges are also ideal as a filling for pancakes or as orange cream on a cake.
