Sow or plant saxifrage early?
Freshly sprouted Saxifrage grows very slowly at first and can therefore easily be overgrown and displaced by other plants. Therefore, when sowing directly in the garden, it can be difficult to distinguish the young plants from food and light competitors in the “weeds” category. You should also note that the seeds of the saxifrage usually need a pronounced cold phase before germination when they are grown in pots and bowls.

Which location does the saxifrage prefer?
The question of the correct location has to be answered broken down into the subspecies of the saxifrage. In general, there are the following rough subdivisions:
- Moss saxifrage
- Upholstered saxifrage
- Sedum saxifrage
- Mug saxifrage
- Fall saxifrage
The upholstered saxifrage is well suited for locations in full sun such as rock gardens and dry stone walls. In contrast, prefer the subspecies of the moss saxifrage
Locations with partial shade, more humic soil and slightly more pronounced soil moisture. When is the best time to transplant Saxifraga species?
If necessary, saxifrage plants can also be transplanted in autumn if this is not done too shortly before winter. The better time for repotting and transplanting, however, is in spring, when strong night frosts are no longer to be expected.
How can the saxifrage be propagated?
Bald spots in the saxifrage cushions can be "filled in" by cutting off cuttings at the side. These usually take root relatively quickly and easily. Since most Saxifraga species can spread rapidly under suitable conditions, reproduction by division is very popular. When growing from seeds, it should be noted that the seeds are cold germs that should not be covered too thickly with soil.
When does the saxifrage bloom?
Many saxifrage species bloom from May to June or July. The representatives of the autumn saxifrage, which is named after its flowering time in October and November, are an exception.
Which substrate does the saxifrage prefer?
Sun-loving and drought-tolerant species of upholstered saxifrage should grow on a well-drained substrate with as high a proportion of sand and gravel as possible to be cultivated. Of the Moss saxifrage On the other hand, it grows better if it is protected from drying out by a humus-rich subsoil and a layer of mulch.
Tips
With the saxifrage it can sometimes happen that its short roots lose contact with the ground due to cushion growth or underwashing. Therefore, check “suspiciously” curved specimens for their contact with the ground in order to prevent damage to plants.
