Attractive curb stones

Concrete lawn edging is a very good way of preventing gravel from getting into the adjacent areas. There are stones that are at ground level as well as variants that are placed vertically in a bed of sand or mortar. These are a few centimeters higher than the edge of the floor and are therefore more suitable than flush-laid boundaries.

The relocation

Vertical lawn edging stones almost always have to be concreted, because only a loamy, very heavy soil offers sufficient support. The individual work steps are as follows:

  • Dig about eight inches deep trench along the bed.
  • Concrete, consisting of four parts of coarse masonry sand and one part of cement, should not be too liquid.
  • Pour in a layer of concrete five centimeters high.
  • Insert and fix curb stones.
  • Fill the side with sand.
  • A paving hammer is recommended for alignment, as this does not damage the stones.
  • Cover the bed with gravel, put some soil on the lawn side.

Steel lawn edging

These blend in very well with modern designed gardens. They are made of stainless steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, aluminum or antique steel with a beautiful, morbid-looking patina. This almost indestructible edging is made in such a way that additional anchoring is usually not necessary.

The relocation

  • Lay out the metal profiles and screw them together.
  • If the surface is soft, you can hammer in the edges at a slight angle with a hammer. Place a wooden board on the surface so that it is not damaged.
  • With compacted subsoil with a spade prick and then insert the edging.

Very attractive: the natural stone border

This border takes up the look of the gravel bed and therefore harmonizes very well. Unfortunately, this variant is not the most expensive. Cast stone made from cement looks very similar to the natural stone edge, but is much cheaper.

Tips

Vertical lawn edging stones have the disadvantage that they cannot mow directly at the boundary with a lawn mower and always have to rework with the trimmer. Lay a row of ground-level end stones in front of the vertical ones, catching the last stalk as well.
