Ground cover for the blazing sun not only have to cope with the fact that the location is sunny. Little water and great heat are also everyday conditions for them. Which plants are suitable?
Selection criteria
If the location is sunny or is completely unshaded in the sun, this places special demands on the plants. It's not just the burning light that can be problematic. The following factors should also play a role in the decision for planting:
Substrate
Sandy or loamy? Loamy earth can literally bake in hot, dry weather and dry out so badly that cracks appear. The substrate then hardly absorbs water, even when it rains, until the surface is soaked through. But it can store moisture longer. Sandy soil, on the other hand, is more permeable. Although it removes absorbed water more quickly, it absorbs it more quickly even at extreme temperatures. Not all plants are equally suitable for such different conditions.
Moisture and precipitation
How much precipitation falls does not only depend on the season, but also on the respective region. Again, not every crop is suitable for every area. When choosing, you should therefore ensure that the plants are suitable for the respective region. Otherwise, the effort for casting becomes very high. This is especially true when no automatic irrigation system can be installed, such as when planting a grave or ground cover in an allotment garden.
Growth rate
If the soil is to be covered quickly, it is necessary to choose appropriate types of plants. Because the resistant plants in particular tend to be slow in sprouting.
Hardiness
Resistant ground cover for the sun are not automatically hardy or frost-resistant. However, since they are usually cultivated outdoors all year round, either winter-hardy plants must be selected or new plants must be planted every year.
annual or multi-year
If you do not want to spend more time planting beds, paths or graves every year, you should opt for perennial species. If, on the other hand, variety is desired, annual ground cover is the better choice.
