Layer the fire bowl wood correctly

Which fuel is suitable for the Fire bowl?

To light wood you need two different types of wood: a softwood (such as fir or spruce) and a hardwood (such as oak or beech). Softwood has the property of being very easy to ignite. But it doesn't burn for long and hardly embers. Hard wood, on the other hand, is only flame retardant, but burns for a very long time and glows through well. Accordingly, you take softwood logs to light the fire - which is why they are placed in the middle of the fire bowl - and layer the hardwood logs on top. Instead of softwood, you can also use charcoal. Only use well-seasoned and dry wood with a residual moisture of no more than 20 percent. Burning fresh, damp wood is prohibited due to the strong smoke development.

Layer the wood in the fire bowl correctly

There are various options for layering the wood, the two described below have proven to be particularly practical.

The classic pyramid shape

The best way to do this type of stacking is as follows:

  • Crumple up two or three pages of a newspaper and place it in the center of the brazier.
  • Place thin softwood chips or twigs in a pyramid shape around it.
  • This is followed by a layer of slightly thicker softwood branches.
  • First light this pyramid on the paper.
  • The flame should spread to the softwood.
  • If necessary, you can also use grill lighter.
  • Once the fire has burned, gradually add more, larger logs.
  • Now use hardwood.
  • However, not too many logs at once, otherwise the flame will be smothered.

The block layering

This layering has also proven its worth, whereby you should always keep a sufficient distance here between the logs: This is the only way to ensure that the fire is supplied with oxygen will.

  • Place the softwood blocks three centimeters apart, parallel to each other, in the fire bowl.
  • This is followed by a second layer, but rotated by 90 °.
  • Ignite the wood, use newspaper and / or grill lighter if necessary.
  • Now add more hardwood logs, but not too many at once.

Tips

Never use an accelerator such as gasoline. This can quickly lead to a flash of fire, which may seriously injure bystanders.
