Common Pests - And How To Fight Them

Check the yucca for animal pests regularly. Many like to sit on the shoot tips, young leaves, but also on the underside of the leaves and the leaf axils. You are also welcome to use a magnifying glass.

Plant lice

To the Plant lice count aphids, scale insects and mealybugs. These creatures often make themselves noticeable by a sticky coating on the leaves. These are the excretions known as "honeydew". All lice can be treated well with a spray cure, for which you mix 10 drops of tea tree oil (lavender oil for aphids) with one liter of warm water.

Gall mites

An infestation with Gall mites can easily be confused with powdery mildew in the yucca because it has a white and floury topping. In contrast to other plants, this mite does not form galls on the yucca, which is why it is easier to control here. Spraying with rinse water helps in many cases.

Spider mites (red spider)

If there are small bright spots on the upper side of the leaf and perhaps a fine web on the underside of the yucca, then it is a question of spider mites. These only occur when the air in the room is too dry, which is why an increase in air humidity (resp. exposing the infected plant) can help. Spray the plant with a tea tree oil-based solution, although neem supplements can be used in stubborn cases.

Tips

Pests can also be brought into the house through newly purchased plants that have already been infected. Since an infestation is not always obvious at first glance, it is best to first place the newcomers in quarantine in a cooler, not directly sunny place. Only move them to their final location after a few days.
