Reasons for the water turbidity
In any outdoor pond, sooner or later the water will inevitably become cloudy. With the many external factors to which the pond in the garden is exposed, there is no other way. The most important influences that can lead to cloudiness are:
- Fall foliage
- Blown pollen
- Washed in, fertilized garden soil
- Excess fish feed

All these influences lead to an excessively high nutrient content in the water, which in turn is conducive to algae growth. Algae are the most problematic source of clouding of water because they lead to a very unsightly pond appearance and possibly also threaten a possible fish population.
Measures against water turbidity
In order not to let the water turbid develop in the first place, check the water quality as regularly as possible. In particular, the phosphate and nitrogen content must not be too high and should be checked again and again with the help of measuring sticks from specialist shops. Elevated values can be caused in particular by excess fish feed and fish excrement, but also by the above-mentioned nutrient drift and flooding. Over time, these form a so-called sludge layer on the pond floor, which reduces the quality of the pond water through rot and the release of nutrients.
So the most important preventive measures are:
- Regularly fishing for fallen leaves and thread algae
- Sucking off the sludge layer on the pond floor with a pond floor vacuum cleaner
- Avoid excessive fish feed
- Use of a filter system during the warm half of the year
If you are in a hurry to clarify the pond water - perhaps because of an upcoming garden party - you may need a faster solution. There are different methods to clarify the pond water in the short process, but the effects are As with all quick solutions, they are only of short duration and therefore only for individual cases recommend. The quick actions include:
- Algae control agents
- UVC lamps
- Water change
Algae control agents usually lead to the agglomeration of existing algae by chemical means, so that they become in a filter system - if available - can be effectively collected or fished out by hand with the cash can.
Basically the same thing happens with a UVC lamp, just in a different way. Here, too, the algae are made to clump together, but by UV light.
As an immediate measure, changing the water is relatively time-consuming and is also controversial among experts because of the possible introduction of contaminants.
