First, clean your wheelbarrow thoroughly with a brush and some water. Let them dry, then rough the surface with sandpaper. Remove any rust spots as much as possible.

2. drainage

Now drill several holes in the wheelbarrow floor so that excess rainwater can run off. This is very important because almost all plants are extremely sensitive to waterlogging.

3. Color the wheelbarrow

Put some foil or newspaper under the wheelbarrow in case the paint drips and brush or spray paint on your wheelbarrow as you please. Also paint the inside of your wheelbarrow so that the damp earth cannot harm it. Only use non-toxic paint, especially if you plan to plant vegetables or herbs in the wheelbarrow. Let the paint dry well before you continue (follow the manufacturer's instructions!).

4. Fill the wheelbarrow with soil

Before you fill your wheelbarrow, you should put it in its final location. Once the wheelbarrow is planted, it is much more difficult to move, especially if the wheel no longer works.

As the bottom layer, put several centimeters of stones, broken ceramics or Expanded clay(€ 16.36 at Amazon *) in the wheelbarrow. This layer prevents the drainage holes from clogging and offers additional protection against waterlogging.

Then fill the wheelbarrow with soil to just below the brim. If you want to plant vegetables or high-consumption plants, mix some compost in the soil.

5. Plant the wheelbarrow

Now put the plants in the wheelbarrow. Choose only small resp. shallow-rooted plants and make sure there is sufficient spacing between the plants. You can also sow plants right in your wheelbarrow.

Pay attention to the choice of location! Most plants feel most comfortable in a sunny to partially shaded location.
