Is it possible to transplant a willow?

Basically, all types of willow can be repositioned after planting. However, this should be done at a young age for two reasons:

  • Willows grow very expansively and high in a short time
  • older specimens often have difficulties in forming new roots in the new location

time

The best time to transplant a willow is October. At this time the tree is neither growing nor sprouting again.

instructions

  1. Half a year before the planned transplanting, dig a trench around the pasture.
  2. Fill this with compost.
  3. Cut the willow to just above the ground.
  4. Carefully expose the root ball.
  5. Be careful not to damage as few roots as possible.
  6. Pry the root ball out of the earth.
  7. Put the willow in water.
  8. At the new location, dig a hole three times the diameter of the root ball.
  9. Put the willow there.
  10. Fill the hole with soil and press it down lightly.
  11. Water the willow well.

Why is pruning important?

The roots are used to supply the leaves and branches with nutrients. Unfortunately, there is no complete avoidance of lifting a willow out of the ground without damaging the roots. Therefore it could be that the tree has enough nutrients available at the new location, but it cannot absorb them. The fewer leaves and twigs that need to be taken care of in this case, the better the willow will recover.
Incidentally, it is perfectly normal for your willow not to have any flowers in the first year after transplanting. The reason given above is responsible. However, with careful care, it will soon drive it out again.
