When is the right planting time?

So that the clematis forms strong and healthy roots, the soil temperature should be between 14 and 22 degrees. The months from August to October are ideal. You can also plant the clematis in spring, when the temperatures are suitable.

Under no circumstances should there be severe drought and extreme heat. This is particularly important for container goods that can be placed all year round.

Which location is the best?

Clematis grow wild in light deciduous forests, where they use the trees as a climbing aid and grow up to their crown. The cultivars that thrive in our gardens have these special location preference keep.

The foot of the Clematis should stand in the shade while she tries to cant her head in the sun.

What soil requirements does the clematis have?

Like many plants that originally grow in forests, the clematis loves humus-rich, evenly moist soil. If the soil in your garden is very compact, you should definitely put a drainage layer of sand or gravel into the planting hole, as the clematis is very sensitive to waterlogging.

How is the clematis set correctly?

  • Put the pot in a bucket of water for about ten minutes before putting it in.
  • During this time, dig out the planting hole, which should be about twice as large as the root ball.
  • If necessary, improve the substrate with high-quality potting soil and introduce a drainage layer.
  • One Rhizome barrier is recommended if there is a threat of root competition from other plants. For this you can simply use an old flower pot, the bottom of which you remove.
  • Carefully lift the clematis out of the pot. Please do not pull on the shoots, but cut open the planter.
  • Use cultivars five centimeters deeper than was originally the case.
  • Wild species are planted a little higher because they are very sensitive to moisture.
  • After setting, press the soil down well and water it thoroughly.
  • Water regularly so that the clematis grows well.

Tips

Clematis need a climbing aid. When planting a wall with a trellis, make sure that the distance is at least ten centimeters. This allows the wind to circulate and moisture dries off faster. That bends the dreaded Clematis wilt before.
