Where do you get a cutting from?

Only head cuttings are suitable for the propagation of the indoor fir. Other cuttings grow too unevenly and often do not root well.

If you have a head cutting from your room fir cut, this is at the expense of the mother plant. It then forms several tips of the head and loses its characteristic appearance.

Cutting cuttings from the indoor fir only makes sense if you want to dispose of the tree anyway because it has become too big.

Propagation of indoor fir from cuttings

Cut the cutting in winter, as it is then neither too soft nor too woody.

  • Strip off resin
  • Dip the cut end in charcoal
  • Place the cutting in the prepared pot
  • Cover with plastic wrap
  • place warm and bright

Place the cutting in a very bright but not sunny position at at least 20 degrees. It takes several months for the head cutting to sprout roots. Be careful not to let the cuttings rot.

Propagate a room fir from seeds

You can get seeds for indoor fir in specialized nurseries. It is better not to buy anything on the Internet, as only very fresh seeds will germinate. You cannot harvest your own seeds from your room firs.

The best time for that sowing of room firs is early spring. Prepare Growing pots(€ 13.90 at Amazon *) before. Place one seed per pot and lightly cover it with sphagnum or plucked peat.

Place the pots warm and very bright, but not sunny. The ideal growing temperatures are between 18 and 20 degrees. Keep the substrate moderately moist but never wet. The seed rots easily if the soil is too moist. It can take several weeks or even months for them to germinate.

Tips

As a substrate for the non-toxic indoor fir Azalea or rhododendrons are suitable. You can also mix the soil yourself from garden soil, compost, sand and gravel.
