Runner beans and French beans

One way of dividing beans is according to their habit. Runner beans need - hence the name - a pole to grow because they climb. They therefore grow a little higher than French beans and develop tendril shoots. French beans, on the other hand, grow bush-shaped on the ground and do not need any climbing aid.

Differentiate bean types according to genera

All types of beans belong to the family of butterflies, which can also be recognized by their beautiful flowers. Furthermore, all types of beans have in common that they belong to the legumes, which makes them so protein-rich and healthy for us. Then, however, three different genera can be distinguished:

  • Phaseolus (genus of New World beans)
  • Vigna (genus of ancient beans)
  • Vicia (no beans at all, actually vetch)

Phaseolus

The genus Phaseolus is most common in our home gardens, because it includes the French bean (Phaseolus coccineus) and the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris).

Vigna

One type of bean known to us falls into this genus: the cowpea, also known as the cow bean.

Vicia

Although it belongs to the vetch, it is traded and eaten as a bean: the field bean (Vicia faba). It has many names such as broad bean, broad bean or broad bean and is grown primarily for fodder.
