Martens do not hibernate

Both tree marten and stone marten are active all winter long and do not keep any Hibernation. In winter they can become even more of a nuisance: Marten is - like many others - cold in winter, which is why they seek warm retreats. This includes Attics, Thermal insulation in Walls and car engines.

Martens in the car

The widespread rumor that martens eat car tubes is consistently false. A single marten does not even damage the engine compartment. Martens withdraw into the engine - especially in winter - because it is warm here. At some point, however, the marten leaves its retreat again. If a new marten now comes into the warm retreat, its territorial behavior awakens and becomes aggressive, because it smells the marten that was previously quiet here. In the course of his anger, he bites into tubes and cables. This behavior is particularly common for Mating season observed in March / April.

Marten hunting in winter

Martens are particularly popular in winter. On the one hand, the winter time, at least for beech martens, is definitely outside of the Closed season, on the other hand there are those in the white snow traces good to see. In addition, martens have a particularly beautiful, soft, dense fur in winter that can be used to make bags or rugs.

No marten hunt without a hunting license!

But beware! In most federal states, hunting martens without a marten license is prohibited and can result in severe fines of up to € 5,000. This often includes catching them in live traps at home. If in doubt, check with your local Hunter.
