Appearance of the leaves

Small needles adorn the branches

The sequoia is a conifer. The appearance of its leaves varies depending on the species. The mountain sequoia, for example, has scale-shaped needles that are either arranged in groups or tufts. The coastal redwood, on the other hand, has single, needle-like leaves. These alternate feathers are severely parted. On average, their length is 4 to 20 mm, their width is 1 to 2.5 mm. What all sequoia species have in common is the dark green color of their needles, some of which can also take on a bluish shimmer. The leaves are reminiscent of those of the yew tree. While the top has an intense green hue, the bottom is a little lighter.

Cones, flowers and seeds

Both small flowers and cones, which hold the seeds of the Sequoia, sit on the needles.
Interesting facts about the flowers:

  • Length of the male flowers: 5-7 mm
  • Length of the female flowers: 10 mm
  • Color of the male flowers: pale yellow
  • Color of the female flowers: green
  • Flowering time of the mountain sequoia: March to April
  • Flowering period of the coastal redwood: February to March

Interesting facts about the cones:

  • ovate
  • hang down
  • 1.5 to 3 cm long
  • form only after 20 to 25 years
  • Fruiting of the mountain sequoia: July to August
  • Coast redwood fruiting: September to November

The sequoia is monoecious, so it has both male and female flowers. This enables self-fertilization.

Falling leaves in autumn

When the cold snap, the leaves of the sequoia turn red-brown. In autumn, the Seqouia completely sheds its needles. In the following spring you can look forward to a deep green dress of leaves.

Special features of the coastal sequoia

The evergreen coastal sequoia alone wears its needle dress all year round. A profuse loss of leaves indicates a pest infestation or disease. Possibly incorrect pouring is responsible for this.
