Basic rules

It is better to prune old apple trees a little more intensively than several times with less intervention. Make sure that no stumps remain, as these encourage water veins. Derive on strong branches that are in the correct orientation. With all pruning measures, you should keep in mind that you want horizontal shoots with short fruit shoots at the end.

Tips for beginners

In the apple tree, experts differentiate between scaffold branches and Fruitwood. The basic structure provides the crown shape, which usually consists of two to three levels. These side branches should not be too close together, because over time they form a strong growth in thickness. The fruit branches are ideally weak and evenly distributed on the framework. A regular cut promotes their development.

time

Cutting measures on the Boskop between October and March are unsuitable, as temperatures can drop into double-digit minus ranges during this period. Cuts would tear, creating a portal for fungi and bacteria to enter. The fruit trees are unable to close such open wounds in the winter months.

Depending on the temperature in spring, the flow of sap heralds the end of the resting phase. This can be done between January and March, depending on the weather. Focus on the post-March period with the pruning.

Cutting measures

If you have a Pruning apple tree you should proceed in several steps. You don't have to perform the same procedures every year. Which cut is recommended depends on the condition of your boscope.

Thinning out the crown

The first step in any intervention is to remove the offending branches. Cap those specimens that cross, grow into the crown, or have died. Then remove all water bullets that strive vertically upwards. The same goes for branches that are directed downwards.

Form the framework

Branches of the same rank should come off to the side at about the same height. This growth habit is called Juice scales denotes and forms the basic principle for all scaffolding branches. Remove any shoots that do not fall under this theory.

Process fruit wood

The fruit-bearing branches are cut with care and consideration. They are evenly distributed on the scaffolding. Since the Boskop apples grow on them later, they should neither be too weak nor too long.

Method:

  • Shorten branches that grow downwards
  • Shorten old and weak branches down to the scaffold branch
  • Cut steep drives at the base
  • Do not prune the remaining side shoots

Tips

You can rejuvenate old fruit branches by cutting them back to about an inch above a bud. New fruit wood is developing here.
