These cacti stand up to frost and snow

The following cacti are not only masters in storing water, but also have a stable winter hardiness for outside:

• Opuntia (prickly pear cacti): from 10 to 100 cm in height and hardy to impressive - 22 degrees Celsius
• Echinocereus (hedgehog columnar cacti): z. B. E. baileyi and E. reichbachii with a winter hardiness of up to - 32 degrees Celsius
• Escorbaria vivipara forma (ball cactus): small in diameter and huge in its frost hardiness up to - 25 degrees Celsius

While numerous species and varieties cavort among the popular prickly pear cacti that you can find outside can plant, among the hedgehog column cacti and ball cacti are only the specimens mentioned hardy. For example, the popular gold ball cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) cannot cope with temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

The multi-faceted family of thick-leaf plants includes the wonderful genus of houseleeks, which cause a sensation outside in the garden with their magnificent leaf rosettes and wonderful flowers. Their preference for fresh air and sunshine goes so far that Sempervivum are only partially suitable as indoor plants.

Premium varieties offer heights of between 10 and 40 cm, inspire with picturesque leaf rosettes in changing colors and enchant with magnificent flowers in summer. In winter, fatty hens can last up to - 23 degrees Celsius if they are protected from permanent wetness.
