Plant bare-rooted or ball hornbeams in autumn
Autumn is the best time to plant a hornbeam that you bought bare-rooted, i.e. without soil, or as a bale. This also applies to hornbeams that you yourself increased or have drawn from offshoots. In autumn the soil is sufficiently moist and there is no risk of the young roots drying out.

Before planting, place the trees in a water bath for a few hours so that the roots can soak up well.
If you missed the right time, you can still plant hornbeams in spring if necessary. Choose a frost-free day for this and don't forget to close the tree regularly to water.
Plant container trees all year round
With a hornbeam in a container, the planting time is not that important. It has strong roots and is supplied with sufficient soil. But you also need a higher one price pay.
You can plant a container hornbeam all year round. Planting the tree is not advisable only in midsummer or when there is frost in winter.
Container plants grow best if you place them in the garden from September to May.
Tips
If you are planting hornbeams as a solitary tree, keep an adequate one distance to buildings. The trees do not develop roots that damage walls or paving stones. However, the crown can reach considerable dimensions after a few years.
