Location

The strawberry mint is adaptable, but prefers a sunny spot on moist soil. If you cultivate the plant in a tub, a partially shaded location is more suitable. Here the earth doesn't dry out so quickly. Avoid shady spots as the aroma of the leaves only unfolds in sunny conditions. Strawberry mint grows more slowly in low-light conditions.

to water

Moisture is vital for the strawberry mint, because under dry conditions it can quickly hang its leaves. With regular watering units you cover the high water requirements of the aromatic plant. Permanent wetness is undesirable as the roots rot quickly. Container plants have to be watered more often than outdoor plants, as the substrate in the pot dries out faster. When planting, look for a drainage made of potsherds or gravel for better water drainage.

Fertilize

Every six weeks you can give the strawberry mint in the pot a liquid fertilizer over the irrigation water. Use organic fertilizers when using the leaves in the kitchen. In the spring, plants that grow in the open are covered with compost or Horn shavings(€ 32.93 at Amazon *) provided. This gives the strawberry mint one Slow release fertilizersufficient for one growing season.

Cut

If you harvest the leaves regularly, the plant will be stimulated to make new branches. It grows bushier and stays compact. Regular pruning is not necessary. It is advisable to prune back vigorously in spring so that the plant sprouts abundantly again.

Overwinter

In the garden, the strawberry mint survives the winter with appropriate protection. If you cultivate the herb in the bucket, you can bury it in the ground. Make sure that no water collects in the pot. You can also overwinter potted plants warm on the windowsill. During the cold season the leaves develop a weaker aroma.

Care in winter:

  • Water on frost-free days
  • Protect the bucket with bubble wrap
  • Cover outdoor plants with brushwood
