The flow of juice and legislators determine the best time

Already early in the year, a strong flow of sap begins in the sycamore, which forbids a drastic pruning. The classic cutting date for trees in early spring is not valid for an Acer pseudoplatanus. In summer the flow of sap decreases noticeably. However, the Federal Nature Conservation Act prohibits far-reaching cutting measures from 1. March to 30th September. How to do it right:

  • Main cut with removal of deadwood: from October to December
  • Slight topiary: between the end of June and mid-July

Sycamore cut according to the minimum principle - this is how it works

In late autumn and early winter is the right time to thin out a crown that is too dense. Remove dead branches from the base. When making the cut, make sure that the Astring is not hurt. On this occasion, please also cut off branches that are pointing towards the inside of the crown. If two competing tips are formed, the weaker shoot should be sawn off as close to the trunk as possible and on astring.

If you want to reduce the size of the crown as a whole, ideally act according to the minimum principle. Cut back as much as necessary and as little as possible. If it is only a question of the average of this year's increase, use scissors in June / July. Always set the blade at a short distance from a leaf, a bud or a sleeping one eyeto promote a vital shoot.

Serious cutting measures need to be carefully considered on the sycamore, as it rarely sprouts out of the old wood.

Tips

A sycamore maple receives the most important pruning of its long tree life immediately after planting. If you have decided on a young plant as a substrate-free root product or ball product, a lot of root mass will be lost during the excavation in the nursery. You compensate for this loss by shortening all shoots by about a third.
