Watering and fertilizing in a balanced way - this is how it works

Cut sage with a sense of proportion - how to do it right

Go in the pot with sage Cut and To harvest Hand in hand. The top priority is not to cut into the wood. All other aspects follow it. The following tips show the way:

  • As soon as budding begins, prune the plant regularly
  • Each harvest can be expanded by cutting additional shoot tips
  • From August onwards, stop blending sage

The central conservation pruning should ideally be carried out in February or March, just before the new sage sprouts. All branches are cut back to 15 centimeters. On older plants, the two oldest shoots should also be thinned close to the ground.

Professional care creates plants that are equipped for successful wintering in pots. The following precautions serve as effective winter protection:

  • Cover the substrate with straw, leaves or sawdust
  • Wrap the pot thickly in bubble wrap
  • Stand on a block of wood in front of the south wall of the house

Ideally, bright winter quarters with temperatures of 5-10 degrees Celsius are available for kitchen sage. Winter care is limited to a little watering every now and then. Tropical Species of sage can easily spend the winter on the sunny, warm windowsill.

Tips & Tricks

Preferably grow sage in an unglazed clay pot. This not only creates a decorative and authentic appearance, but also ensures good ventilation of the substrate thanks to the open-pored material.
