Only fresh goods can stay fresh
The foundation stone for optimal storage is laid with the purchase. Only buy carrots that meet all freshness criteria:
- they are firm and crisp
- Carrot heads mustn't already be green
- in the case of bunched carrots, the green is still juicy and rich in color

Remove plastic from carrots
Carrots are often packaged in supermarkets. This plastic packaging is quite practical for transport, but it is unsuitable for longer storage. No moisture can escape from it and it is only a matter of time before the carrots will go moldy.
Do not wash before storage
If carrots are washed before storage, they run the risk of staining and spoiling. The roots should always be washed and peeled immediately before consumption.
Store carrots in the refrigerator
Carrots that are not consumed immediately can be stored in the refrigerator.
- Take the carrots out of the packaging.
- Remove the green from the bunch of carrots.
- Wrap the beets in a damp kitchen towel.
- Place the carrots in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.
Tips
Do not store carrots with apples, pears or ripe tomatoes. The carrots quickly develop a bitter taste in this neighborhood.
Store carrots in the cellar for months
Large amounts of carrots can hardly find enough space in the refrigerator. A cool cellar is the solution. All you need is a large container and enough sand.
- the bottom of the container is covered with sand
- carrots are layered on top
- each layer of carrots is also covered with sand
- the optimal storage location is cool and frost-free
The carrots stored in sand keep fresh until spring and can be removed as needed.
Freeze in the freezer
The carrots are first washed and peeled. They are then cut into small pieces that are blanched for about two to four minutes before freezing.
The cooled and dried vegetables are ideally frozen in shallow containers and should be consumed within a year.
