The right subsurface for the compost
Whether you set up a compost bin or a traditional composter in the garden - the right surface plays an important role. It is always placed directly on the ground - without a base plate.

Good compost is only created if the microorganisms necessary for the decomposition of garden waste can migrate from the earth into the composter. Therefore, you must never place the composter on plates or any other solid surface.
Even with a bare surface, the moisture generated by decomposition and rain can run off well. If the compost material becomes too wet, it will rot. The compost stinks and can only be used after a long time.
Prepare the soil for the compost
When you have found a convenient place for the compost, clear the soil of weeds and remove stones and other thickening.
Loosen very firm clay soils with the Digging fork and mix the substrate with sand or gravel.
Here's how to properly build the compost
Will the compost be new put on, fill in roughly shredded material as the bottom layer, such as:
- Branches and twigs
- Tree bark
- Hedge trimming
- chopped flower and herbaceous stems
The individual parts should not be longer than 20 cm.
Then, toss a few scoops of ripe compost on the bottom layer. Alternatively, add compost starter to the compost.
