Hydrangea planting time: when is it ideal?

Hydrangeas can usually be planted year-round, but there are some times of the year that are particularly good for planting.

spring

Those who plant their hydrangeas in spring can, with a little luck, enjoy the decorative flowers in the first year of planting. Because hydrangeas planted in spring usually grow very quickly - provided the optimal conditions have been created. The foundation is provided by planting at the right time, because although spring is recommended for planting per se, certain requirements should be met:

  • Planting after the ice saints
  • Lower likelihood of ground frost
  • Temperatures above 13 degrees Celsius are ideal

summer

Hydrangeas can be planted in summer, but this is not ideal. Because in summer, the heat creates additional problems for the plants, so that the already stressed plants suffer even more stress. If you still want to plant the plants in summer, you must also expect increased workload. Because of the heat, the freshly planted hydrangeas have to be watered more often. In addition, when planting in the warm season, you should pay attention to the following:

  • do not plant at noon
  • The midday sun stresses plants even more
  • The plant must never dry out

autumn

Hydrangea - Hydrangea

In addition to spring, autumn is by far the best time to plant hydrangeas. This is due on the one hand to the pleasant temperatures and on the other hand to the moisture in the soil. These two factors provide the optimal conditions for hydrangeas to grow, which is why autumn is also very suitable for planting. However, the day in autumn should also be well chosen so that the hydrangeas can grow well:

  • no frost
  • late summer / early autumn is ideal

winter

Hydrangeas are not winter-proof, but with frost protection they can be overwintered without any problems. However, the cold season is not suitable for planting for frost-sensitive plants, which is why it is not advisable.

Plant bare-rooted specimens

While hydrangeas can be planted in containers all year round (except winter), the same applies to bare-rooted ones

Copies a different guideline. Spring is only partially recommendable for these little plants, as the hydrangeas initially concentrate on root growth. If they were to be planted in spring, only sparse outgrowth would be expected. However, planting them in autumn gives them the time they need to be able to produce magnificent flowers in the following year.
  • Plant before frost
  • Put bare-root specimens in the soil as quickly as possible

Note: If the direct planting of bare-root hydrangeas is not possible, their roots should be wrapped in a damp cloth and the plant itself should be stored in the shade.

Transplanting

Transplanting is stressful for plants that hydrangeas do not tolerate so well. It is therefore advisable to provide the plant with a location with optimal conditions and to avoid transplanting. If you still want to move the plant to a new location, you should preferably do this in autumn.
