The following applies: the warmer the room in which you overwinter the plants, the lighter it should also be.
When are the plants brought into the house?
The later the potted plants move to the winter quarters and the earlier you can clear them out, the shorter the period of time in which the location is suboptimal. However, the temperatures must not fall below the value that the plants can just cope with. You should therefore orient yourself to the current weather conditions and the needs of the plants.
The necessary maintenance measures
- Let the substrate dry off before moving into the house. This prevents putrefaction.
- Cut back potted plants and remove diseased and damaged shoots. This not only reduces the space required, but also reduces evaporation and thus the water requirement in evergreen plants.
- Plants like Convertible rose or Fuchsias are defoliated.
- A thorough pest control follows. Find yourself Spider mites, Mealybugs or other insect pests, isolate the infested potted plants and treat them with a commercially available agent.
In winter quarters, water is only poured when the earth feels really dry. With the Fertilize you are allowed to suspend completely.
It is important to regularly check the plants for pest infestation. Ventilate on frost-free days, this promotes plant health.
Tips
If you do not have a suitable space for wintering, you can use an inflatable greenhouse. An optional heater fan and a temperature sensor ensure a slight temperature control so that plants sensitive to the cold can be overwintered. If you don't have the space for this alternative, you can fall back on the wintering service of a nursery.
