Privet, a shallow root

Over the years, privet forms a very dense, finely branched root system that does not extend too deeply. As shallow roots, the roots stay relatively close to the surface.

The advantage is that the roots do not become so strong that they damage masonry or lift paving slabs. You can therefore use a privet relatively tight place next to buildings or paths.

Transplant privet in the garden

Many garden owners assume that a shallow root such as the privet can grow quite easily transplant leaves. That is only partly true. Moving older privet bushes is a sweaty job. You need to dig generously around the shrub to get the roots out of the ground as undamaged.

You can dig up and transplant younger privet bushes with relative ease. Make sure, however, that you do not damage or kink the root system too much when digging out and replanting.
