Can this perennial cope with drought?

the Knapweed is not a fan of dry seasons. If there is heat in summer or prolonged dry periods, she thirsts and needs water. Water them regularly, preferably with rainwater (doesn't like lime). Watering is not only important for beautiful flowers, but also protects the plant from weakness and the consequent infestation of pests and diseases.

The soil should be kept moist, even and moderately. This is especially true for knapweed in the tub, for example on the balcony. Make sure that the drainage fits so that there is no waterlogging and water every few days!

Which fertilizers are suitable and must be fertilized inevitably?

If the knapweed is planted in a substrate enriched with compost, it can do without fertilizer for a long time. Then it is not absolutely necessary to apply fertilizer in the first two years of standing. If, on the other hand, this perennial is in the bucket, it should be supplied with a conventional liquid fertilizer for flowering plants every 2 weeks during its growing season.

Flake flowers in the open are happy about a fertilizer application in spring and a second annual fertilizer application in autumn. To the Fertilize are among others:

  • compost
  • rotted horse manure
  • Horn shavings
  • Nettle manure
  • Comfrey manure
  • Blue grain

Does the knapweed need pruning?

  • Cutting off old flowers has a positive effect on the formation of new flowers
  • prune radically in spring or autumn
  • Regularly remove old, withered parts of the plant
  • do not cut too early in autumn (roots draw strength from the leaves and stems)
  • Result of the strong pruning: Better budding

Tips

Pests usually do not attack the knapweed. In damp weather, however, you can be wrong mildew play along badly. If you live in a rather humid region, prevent it by fertilizing a stock made from field horsetail!
