The vetch forms legumes from the beautiful butterfly blossoms, which open at the back and belly seams as they ripen. In each pod there are about eight seeds that are wingless.

Harvest seeds yourself

If you are growing vetches in your garden, you can collect the seeds yourself in autumn and sow them in the following spring. It is important that the seeds are harvested when they are fully ripe. It must be possible to open the pod with light pressure and release the grains.

Drying and storing seeds

Let the seeds dry on paper towels for a few days so that they don't start to rot or go moldy. Then keep this in small paper bags until the next garden season. Don't forget to label it so that you don't confuse the wick seeds with the seeds of other plants.

Sow sweet peas

In spring you can sow the robust vetches directly at the planned location in the garden. In damp regions or in areas prone to late frosts, you should prefer the vetch indoors:

• Let the hard seeds soak in lukewarm water overnight.
• Seeds individually with a distance of a few centimeters in with Potting soil give filled seed trays.
• Sweet peas are dark germs. For this reason, cover the seeds with soil. A layer of one to two centimeters is sufficient.
• Moisten with a sprayer and germinate in a bright, but not full sun, place at temperatures of around 15 degrees.

After the ice saints, you can move the sweet peas directly to their later place in the flowerbed plants.

Seeds cost the plant a lot of strength

During the summer, you should regularly remove faded so that the vetch blooms abundantly and not all of its strength goes into seed formation. In addition, sweet peas become very polluted and could then even become a nuisance.
