Propagation by sowing
Some types of indoor bamboo form spike-like bouquets with seeds on the stalks. You cut off the ears and sow them in small planters. In order for the seeds to sprout well, put them in a warm and sunny place. Watered regularly, the first little straws should appear after a few weeks. Germination can be promoted by covering the planters with cling film. This creates a moist warmth. However, the mini greenhouse must be ventilated regularly to prevent mold from forming.
As soon as the small bamboo trees are about 10 cm high, they can be transplanted into larger pots.
The multiplication by division
If Pogonatherum paniceum is well cared for, it will develop into a large, bushy houseplant that will soon be too big for its pot. Then it can be repotted without any problems. If you want to continue to cultivate your bamboo on the windowsill and not in a bucket on the floor, you can divide the plant in the course of repotting. Proceed as follows:
- Take the bamboo out of its old planter.
- Shake off some soil and divide the root ball with a sharp knife.
- Now place both plants in prepared pots with nutrient-rich, fresh plant substrate.
Propagation by root runners
The room bamboo has a habit of forming abundant runners in its planter. If you leave them with the mother plant, the ever-growing bush will eventually burst the plant pot. It is better if you carefully remove the "children" when repotting the plant. If you want to multiply your bamboo, you can put these runners in a glass with water and put it in a warm place. After a while, roots will form. Once a real tuft of roots has formed, the runners can be cultivated in a planter with soil.
With this method of propagation, care must be taken to ensure good ventilation and regular water exchange.
