That is why the leaves of the copper beech are dark red

European beech have green leaves. They are only called red beech because of the fresh wood, which is reddish in color. The copper beech differs from the copper beech in its striking red-brown leaf color.

It arises because the red dye cyanidin is so represented in the leaves that it almost completely covers the green dye (chlorophyll).

Color of the leaves over the course of the year

In spring the leaves appear in their characteristic red hue. It can vary from dark red to green red.

In autumn the leaves take on the typical orange-red color, which is particularly intense in the second and third week of November.

Then leaves turn green and fall off.

Recognize pest infestation on the leaves

In autumn the copper beech leaves roll up before they fall off. If, however, the leaves have changed beforehand roll up and dry up, pests such as the beech ornamental louse or the beech wool louse are often at work.

A light infestation does not make a difference to a healthy copper beech. But if the tree is weakened, you have to fight the pests.

There are special products on the market that are mainly used during the winter. As a preventive measure, ensure that the tree has sufficient nutrients available. Avoid nitrogenous fertilizer.
