Are walnuts frozen with or without their shells?

Check walnut kernels critically

Walnuts are a purely natural product that is exposed to many influences. Although the hard shell protects the soft kernels well, it cannot entirely prevent damage. After cracking it, take a close look at each core and sort out any cores that are not flawless:

  • dried up kernels
  • Cores with traces of mold
  • pitted kernels

Walnut kernels are a popular snack, the ingredients they contain are said to have a positive effect on brain performance. But mostly walnuts are used for baking. It therefore makes sense to freeze them in the form in which they will be needed later.

Tips

Walnuts can be crushed faster with a rolling pin than with a knife. To do this, the nuts are placed in a large bag and rolled over several times with the rolling pin.

Weigh the walnuts appropriately

Since the whole amount of frozen walnuts is never used at once, it should be divided into suitable portions before freezing. Unlike other frozen food, the scales play an important role here.

Baking recipes work with exactly specified quantities, on compliance with which the success depends. Usually 100 or 200 grams of walnuts are required. Fill several small freezer bags with these quantities and label them accordingly. This way, there are no leftovers after baking.

The best-before date of the frozen walnuts allows them to be used until the next harvest. These healthy nuts can stay in the frosty environment for a full 12 months without losing their taste.

Defrost in minutes

Walnuts intended to enrich a cake can be used straight away from the freezer. By the time the cake is in the oven, the small pieces have long since thawed. The oven heat does the rest.

Walnuts, which are intended to be eaten raw, are just as easy to use. If the appetite for these seeds is spontaneously aroused, it can be satisfied about 15 minutes later. The kernels do not need longer to thaw.

If you prefer to process the frozen walnuts in ground form, you do not have to wait for them to thaw.
Put the still frosty nuts directly into the mixer, because they can be painted very finely even in this condition.
