In spring or in autumn?

The ideal time to plant roses is between October and April

In general, October is considered the best time to plant not only for climbing roses, but for almost all roses. At this point the plants have already shed their leaves and are preparing for winter dormancy. Now you can turn the climbing rose or transplantwithout exposing them to too much stress - the so-called “plant shock” does not occur. In principle, you can also plant the rose later if the weather allows it. The temperatures should just not be lower than 0 ° C and the ground should not be frozen.

Which is why autumn is usually preferable

There are various reasons for autumn as the ideal planting time. That the climbing rose is in the Hibernation is not even the most important - after all, the plant does not sprout before March or April, which is why spring planting is always an option. However, the following reasons speak for autumn:

• The climbing rose can develop new hair roots by spring
• and therefore drive them out more quickly.
• Anyone who buys roses in autumn receives goods fresh from the field that grow more easily.
• Roses bought in spring have often been stored in the cold store for a few months and are therefore no longer fresh.
• These plants tend to grow poorly and are more susceptible to disease.

When it makes sense to plant climbing roses in the spring

As most climbing roses hardy when fully mature they can easily be planted before a long cold spell in autumn. If you want to be on the safe side, choose especially robust and frost hardy varieties. These are also provided with appropriate winter protection. It is usually sufficient to pile up a thick layer of earth and cover the base of the rose with spruce branches. However, if you live in a very cold winter region with prolonged frosts, planting in spring makes more sense. The same applies to climbing rose varieties that are sensitive to the cold.
