Location and substrate
The location and substrate depend on the species chosen, as each conifer has different preferences in this regard. However, you need your Potted plants - in contrast to garden plants - fortunately do not choose according to their preferences, as you can provide them with the necessary conditions. That applies at least to the substrate, which can be mixed individually for each tree. Some conifers need sandy, rather poor soil, others prefer humus-rich, loose substrate and still others only feel more acidic Rhododendron soil well.

Planting and care
The different species also differ greatly in terms of care.
Choosing the planter
Clay or ceramic pots in light colors are ideal for conifers so that the roots in them do not heat up too much. Avoid dark colors and plastic containers, as these retain more heat and can quickly lead to overheating - Quite apart from the fact that plants in such pots have to be watered much more frequently and run the risk more quickly, to dry out. Repot the conifers in fresh substrate about every two to three years.
drainage
Conifers should always be kept slightly moist during the summer months, but waterlogging should be avoided. This leads to root rot and thus to the death of the plant. So as a preventive measure, make sure you have good drainage, which contains the following components:
- Drain hole on the underside of the bottom of the pot
- Pottery shards or a layer Expanded clay(€ 16.36 at Amazon *) on the bottom of the pot
- This prevents the drainage hole from clogging up.
- Mixing of the substrate with expanded clay beads
- Place the pot on a saucer where the water can drain off
- regular pouring out of excess water
In summer, conifers in the pot should be watered regularly, whereby the substrate should only feel slightly damp. It is fertilized with low-nitrogen, liquid fertilizers for green plants or, if it is a species with a preference for acidic soil, for rhododendrons. Prepare a weak dose and give it about every two weeks between March and the end of July.
Tips
Hardy conifers can also hibernate outside in the pot, provided you place the pot on an insulating surface (e. B. a wooden disc or styrofoam) and wrap the pot with a fleece.
