Sage head cuttings - powerful offshoots for propagation
Shortly before flowering, the full life pulsates in the sage. This is especially true for the herbaceous shoot tips of the evergreen subshrub. Consequently, head cuttings are the most powerful offshoots of the Mediterranean herb plant. This is how it works Multiplication effortless:
- From June / July cut off shoot tips with a length of 6-10 centimeters
- Defoliate each head cutting in the lower half
- Fill the pots with a lean mix of herbal soil and sand and moisten
- Insert cuttings individually so deep that at least 2 pairs of leaves can be seen

A slipped over transparent hood creates a humid, warm microclimate that promotes the rooting process. The substrate must not dry out in the following 2-3 weeks. As soon as the roots grow out of the opening in the ground and a fresh shoot appears, the hood has done its job. Once the young sage has completely rooted its pot, it is ripe for them
planting at the selected location.Clever use of the power of the mother plant for cuttings
Propagation by means of a sinker leaves the mother plant with the care of the offspring. How easy this method works is explained here step by step:
- Determine an annual, healthy shoot for the sinker in early summer
- Pull this to the ground in order to create a furrow 10 centimeters deep
- Cover the middle area of the cuttings with soil and, if necessary, a stone
- The tip of the shoot sticks out about 10-15 centimeters from the earth to be attached to a wooden stick
While the mother plant supplies the offshoot with nutrients in the following weeks, a new root system develops in the furrow. If a new leaf shows up at the tip and you feel counter-pressure when you pull it lightly, the rooting is successful. After separating from the mother plant, dig up the young plant and plant it in the new location.
Tips & Tricks
The savers among hobby gardeners transform a disused PET drinking bottle into a mini greenhouse for Sage cuttings. To do this, the bottom is cut off and the bottle is placed over the cultivation pot. Simply twist off the lid to ventilate and lift the bottle to pour.
