Is it worth it to dry the wood yourself

Firewood can be purchased already dried. However, this fuel is significantly more expensive than freshly felled wood, which you split, layer and store on your own. This manageable effort can save quite a few euros.

Drying firewood in the open air

If you store the firewood professionally outdoors, the moisture contained in the fuel will evaporate by itself. However, this can take years.

It is therefore advisable to split the firewood in advance. This creates a larger surface and the moisture is released into the environment more quickly.

The optimal storage place

So that the billets dry out as quickly as possible, you have to stack them up in such a way that drying is accelerated:

  • The firewood should be illuminated by the sun.
  • The evaporated water is quickly transported away through good ventilation.
  • The pile should be aligned in such a way that it is protected from rain, which in our part of the world mostly comes from the west.
  • Be from above Rainfall held by a roof or a tarpaulin.

Ideal storage options on private land

How you stack the wood depends on the amount of firewood to be dried and the space available. Have proven themselves:

  • Firewood shelf,
  • Wood storage in front of a wall,
  • Rent of wood with a roof made of wood shingles.

The surface must be dry and ideally consists of paving stones. Grass or soil hold the moisture for too long, so that it could rise into the pile of wood. Also make sure that the air can circulate under the pile. The distance between the firewood and the floor should not be less than 15 centimeters.

Tips

You should move the dried fuel to the cellar or garage in autumn. Any residual moisture escapes faster here and the wood is protected from dew, which often occurs in the cold season.
