When is the right time to cut back?

Prune the shrub rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' vigorously in early spring. The best time for this is between the end of May and the beginning of April, around the time of the forsythia bloom. However, the thermometer should no longer drop below 0 ° C; a mild, dry day is more suitable.

In spring: Bringing the rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' into shape

In the spring the strong shape cut takes place, in which you cut the rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' back by about half. This type of rose tolerates heavy pruning very well and subsequently sprouts all the more vigorously. When cutting, do the following:

  • First, remove dead and diseased wood.
  • Subsequently, shoots that are growing too densely and crosswise are removed.
  • Weak, thin shoots are severely pruned
  • or completely removed.
  • Strong cut back by half
  • up to one that points outwards eye.
  • You can shorten older, blooming shoots by at least two thirds
  • or remove it directly from the base.

Ultimately, you leave at most between four and eight strong shoots that are only half as high as they were before the cut.

In summer: remove faded regularly

'Leonardo da Vinci' is one of the frequent flowering shrub roseswhich tirelessly shows its blossoms between June and September. To ensure that it stays that way, however, you should regularly remove faded. Only then is the plant repeatedly stimulated to develop new flowers, and this measure also helps to keep it healthy. 'Leonardo da Vinci' does not reliably throw off what has faded, so that these flower heads dry up on the bush and can subsequently serve as a gateway for various pathogens.

Tips

If possible, do not cut back rose bushes in autumn. There is a risk that the shoots will freeze back even further during the winter.
