How to successfully grow vegetables on the balcony

Prefer special vegetables for the balcony

In the Selection of suitable vegetables and types you should primarily rely on special types of balcony. These were specially bred for pot culture, remain relatively small - what a limited one Space available can only be an advantage - and still deliver a comparatively high yield, assuming conscientious care, of course.

tomatoes

Tomatoes are the classics on every balcony, as the sensitive fruit vegetables often thrive better under sheltered conditions than outdoors. A covered balcony, facing south, provides enough light and warmth for the plants to thrive. The rain cover also ensures that the dreaded late blight and brown rot lose their horror. Bush tomatoes can be grown particularly well on the balcony, but cocktail and cherry tomatoes as well as wild tomatoes (which are often particularly productive) are also very suitable.

Cucumber

Cucumbers also feel very comfortable in the sheltered atmosphere of a balcony - especially if you lead them along a climbing aid and grow them as far away as possible from any tomatoes. The snack cucumbers in particular, small and aromatic, are well suited for growing on the balcony.

Bell peppers and chillies

Peppers and chillies are true sun worshipers, need a lot of warmth and careful care. When placed in large pots and in a sunny spot, you can expect a rich harvest of crisp fruits.

radish

Easy to care for, grows quickly and can even be grown in a balcony box: radishes should not be missing in any balcony garden. The crisp, small roots can be sown again and again from early spring until well into autumn, even in temporary planters such as cut-open tetra packs.

Sweet peas

Children in particular love the sweet, crunchy sugar balls: They can also be easily brewed in the balcony box or in a bakery box, provided you choose a non-climbing variety. These do not need any climbing support and remain relatively low.

Salads and herbs

Cut and picked salads as well as many herbs are perfect for cultivation in a wide variety of planters. These vegetables in particular can be placed in hanging baskets, on the balcony wall or on a plant staircase to save space.
