Peculiarities of the seeds

The seeds of the funnel-shaped bindweed usually have a brownish-colored surface and are oval to elongated, but quite irregularly shaped. Before the sowing Ideally, they are placed in lukewarm water for a few hours to swell in order to accelerate the germination phase. The following factors are important when sowing:

  • Dark germinator (the seeds should be covered with about 0.5 centimeters of soil)
  • Germination time: 10-14 days
  • optimal germination temperature: 18 - 20 degrees Celsius

The seeds are relatively small, so one gram of seed contains around 40 seeds. For a head start in spring, funnel winds are usually used preferred in the house, because the germination temperature is exactly right here on the windowsill in spring.

Prefer young plants from seeds indoors

So that the plants already have a certain shoot length after the ice saints in May, funnel winds are usually sown on the windowsill from the end of March. To avoid the need to prick out the delicate plants with the even more sensitive roots, 3 to 4 seeds should always be sown together in a rotting plant pot. It is also important to have a nutritious and water-storing substrate when sowing so that the plants do not dry out as quickly in their sunny locations. After the last night frosts and a few days of hourly hardening outdoors, the funnel winds can be planted out in the garden. You can set this in the ground at a slight angle in the direction of the respective trellis to make it easier to climb the climbing aid.

Harvest seeds from the plants yourself

You can harvest the seeds for the following season directly from your own plants if you do not remove dead flowers immediately. The funnel-shaped flowers, which only bloom briefly, quickly form green seed capsules that turn brownish over time. As soon as these appear brittle and dried out, the seeds inside the capsules are fully ripe. Then take a plastic bag or a screw-top jar in order to catch as many seeds as possible when collecting the seed pods. After removing the remains of the capsule, allow the seeds to dry a little before storing them in an airtight packaging.

Tips
