Location and soil

Like almost all kinds of cabbage, kale grows particularly well on nutrient-rich, chalky clay soils. Rather poor sandy soils should be made with compost and granulated Cattle manure(€ 18.80 at Amazon *) enrich.

Kale prefers full sun. Since the vegetables are completely hardy and are traditionally harvested after the first frost, they also thrive very well in rough locations.

Crop rotation and sowing

A mixed culture with outdoor tomatoes is recommended, as these keep pests away from the cabbage. If possible, plant kale in a place in the vegetable patch where you had grown the nitrogen collector peas or beans the previous year.

Sow the kale depending on the variety, from mid-April to mid-May in cultivation boxes directly outdoors. If the second pair of leaves shows up, the plants are separated.

Care during the summer

Six to eight weeks after the sowing you can put the pricked kale plants in the vegetable patch. The planting distance should not be less than 40 by 50 centimeters. This can also be chosen lower. Then transplant the kale as a post-crop in suitable, vacated areas in the bed.

Kale has a very high demand for water. Plenty of watering during the warm summer months is essential for this reason. A thin layer of mulch made of grass clippings ensures that the earth does not dry out so quickly. In addition, you should eat the heavy food with organic Vegetable fertilizer(€ 14.99 at Amazon *) supply. So that the plants thrive, the soil should be loosened regularly.

The harvest

Kale needs the first frost to taste better. That is why the harvest traditionally begins in November. First, cut off the lower leaves at the base of the leaves and use the heart last. So can Kale brought in fresh throughout the winter will.

Be sure to leave the trunk standing. Tender sprouts often form here in spring for a very tasty post-harvest.

Tips

Kale should be put back in the same place in the bed after three years at the earliest. Were your cabbage family from diseases like black cabbage or Carbonic hernia you have to wait six years for them.
