Preliminary considerations

The compost volume is based on the amount of compost per year and household. On average, 150 liters of kitchen waste are generated per person per year. Having a garden increases the volume of biodegradable waste. Around five liters of shredded plant residues are produced per square meter of garden area.

A household with two people creates 300 liters of organic waste per year. A garden with 400 square meters produces 2,000 liters of green waste. The total volume of 2,300 liters of organic waste is reduced by half in the first rotting phases. For this case study, a compost heap with a volume of 1,200 liters is sufficient to store biowaste for an entire year.

1. Base plate

So that you can rearrange the contents more easily, a compost with the dimensions 1.5 mx 1.5 m x 1.5 m is recommended. For the base and three walls you will need about 10 square meters of stones. The front wall is not bricked so that you can easily take out the contents.

2. Mix the mortar

A sack of cement and three times the amount of sand are sufficient for the wall. You mix the mortar freshly with each work step. Cement and sand are mixed with water in a ratio of 1: 3 until a creamy consistency is obtained.

3. Cut out the base

With the spade prick a base out of the ground. Place the stones directly in the earth and make sure that the stones are flat against each other. The cracks are then filled with mortar. Let the base area dry overnight.

4. Wall walls

Brick the two side walls and the rear wall at a height of 1.50 meters. The stones of the higher layer always overlap the joints of the layer below. Wall iron hooks on the top and bottom of the two side walls. You can later hang a board wall in these hooks.

5. Build door

You can use an old tabletop for the board wall, which you can adjust saw and provided with two cross struts. The cross struts are used to hang the wall in the holding device.
