Propagate knotweed using cuttings

Which types of knotweed are suitable for propagation?

Many Knotweed form so-called root cuttings, ergo separable shoots that grow directly from the rhizomes. These shoots can be dug up or separated from the mother plant and cultivated separately as an independent plant. Such an increase, for example, also prefers Japanese knotweed known as giant knotweedthat can form offshoots from even the smallest root components. Other knotweed - such as the climbing knotweed - also develop root-forming offshoots on above-ground shoots. Of the floor covering carpet or piebald knotweed in turn, can be divided easily.

Cut and plant offshoots

The best way to multiply the knotweed and the Scheckenknöterich is with cuttings, which are cut as herbaceous as possible in early summer. Alternatively, lignified cuttings cut in winter can also be used. However, since experience has shown that the success rate is significantly lower, propagation from cuttings in summer should be preferred.

How to multiply smooth knotweed and pinto:

  • Cut shoots about 10 to 15 inches long.
  • These should not be lignified yet.
  • Use a clean and sharp knife.
  • The cut surface should be as inclined as possible for easier water absorption.
  • Dip the interface in Rooting powder.
  • Mix two thirds Potting soil and a third of sand.
  • Insert the cuttings about an inch deep there.
  • Place a perforated plastic bag over the pot.
  • Put the pot in a sunny spot.
  • But not in direct sun.
  • Keep the substrate moist.
  • Ventilate several times a day to avoid mold growth.

After about three to four weeks you can plant the now sufficiently rooted cutting directly to its destination.

Tips

If the weather is favorable, you can also pull the cutting outdoors. Either you cut cuttings and stick them directly into the ground or you multiply the knotweed - especially a tried and tested method with knotweed - using sinkers.
