How are lupins properly watered?

Lupins develop very long roots. They can grow longer than the tall inflorescences. The perennials therefore only have to be watered while they are very young and do not yet have long roots. You don't even have to water older lupins. They take care of themselves through the roots.

Can lupins be transplanted?

Like all perennials, you can have lupins calmly transplant. Be careful not to kink or damage the long roots. You can also divide very large specimens to grow new lupine plants. The best time to transplant is autumn.

How are lupins properly cut?

Basically, lupins don't need to be cut at all. Nevertheless, they grow again every year. However, it is advisable to close off dead flowers immediately cut. Then the perennial often blooms a second time.

Removing the faded panicles also makes sense so that the plants do not sow themselves in an uncontrolled manner. In autumn you can cut the plant down to the ground.

Do lupins need fertilizer?

Lupins also get along well with very poor soil. They do not need any fertilizer. On the contrary: lupins are popular as Green manure used. They form small nodules on the roots that enrich the plant and the soil with nitrogen and thus make it more fertile.

If fertilizer is to be given at all, it should only be ripe compost.

Are lupins hardy?

Lupins in the garden are hardy. They also tolerate very low temperatures below zero. Winter protection is not necessary.

It is different with Lupins in the pot. Here the earth freezes through faster, so you should protect the bucket from frost with foil or other materials.

What pests and diseases can lupins cause?

Only young lupins are really troubled by snails. They eat the young leaves and can damage the young plants considerably. Collect the animals from young lupins. Older, healthy plants can easily survive a snail attack.

mildew occurs when the plants are too moist and too dense. Make sure that air can circulate between the leaves.

If the leaves wither and the flowers fall off prematurely, the viral disease Fusarium wilt may be responsible. Tear up and destroy the plants to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Tips & Tricks

Lupins are also very pretty in colorful summer bouquets. Due to the length of the flower panicles, they are well suited for floor vases. Pick lupins for cut flowers as soon as the lower flowers are open.
