Operate the Asparagus cultivation on a larger scale, the right tools serve well. You need:

  • A curved, sharp asparagus knife
  • Asparagus ladle
  • gloves
  • Harvest basket with cover

How is the asparagus pricked?

As soon as cracks appear on the top of the wall, there is a ripe asparagus stick underneath. With your fingers splayed, go as deep as you can along the bar and carefully expose it.

Cut the rod far below, put it in the basket and cover it.

With the asparagus trowel, the resulting hole is immediately filled with earth again and tapped into place. Only when the surface is smooth is it recognizable when a new pole is growing.

The best time to prick asparagus

Asparagus sprouts quickly in warm temperatures. You should therefore prick twice a day, preferably in the morning and in the afternoon.

Harvest white asparagus in good time before the head has pushed through the wall, otherwise it will discolour. If it is not cut, it forms stems above ground, which in summer blossoms wear.

Harvesting green asparagus

Green asparagus does not have to be pricked. It is cut off just above the ground with a sharp knife.

When is asparagus season?

The season is traditionally on 24. June ended, St. John's Day. After this date, the asparagus must not be harvested to allow the plant to recover.

Tips & Tricks

So that you can prick your asparagus earlier, cover the earth walls with a dark foil. It stores the sun's heat and thereby warms the ground. The asparagus then grows faster.
