Cut the privet conically
The privet is thinned vigorously in spring. All shoots are shortened by one to two thirds. Cut out any dry and thin shoots. Since the privet grows very quickly, it quickly catches up with the pruning.
Cut the privet as conical as possible and not straight. With a very straight cut, there is a risk that the hedge will burn off below because it does not get enough light there. It then no longer sprouts there and also does not form leaves.
Time for the rejuvenation cut
Spring is the best time for you Taper cut of old, already bald privet bushes. You can prune the shrub as much as you want, even down to the cane. If the branches are to branch again, you have to leave a remainder of three cm.
Pour after cutting
Privet is not very demanding what the care concerns. After pruning vigorously, you should water the privet well so that it has enough strength to sprout again.
If you fertilize now is the best time to do so. Don't overdo it though, as privet will react to overfertilization with yellow leaves.
Chop up shrub cuttings
Use the cuttings as mulch material. Chop or cut them up and spread them out under the privet. This protects the soil from drying out and at the same time provides new nutrients.
Tips
Before you set about vigorously pruning the privet, check to see if there are any bird nests. Birds like to use privet for breeding. If necessary, postpone the cut or cut so that you do not disturb the birds.
