Later, because of its long roots, daphne can do without watering at all. They also draw water from very deep layers of the earth.

Do you need to fertilize daphne?

When planting, add some ripe compost to the planting hole. In the first year, a mulch cover provides nutrients, keeps the soil evenly moist and prevents weeds from emerging.

Older plants don't need fertilizer.

Some gardeners recommend liming daphne in spring and fall because daphne grows better on calcareous soil. In most cases, however, it is sufficient if you occasionally work a few crushed or ground eggshells lightly into the soil.

Can daphne be transplanted?

In the first few years you can try the daphne on another Location to transplant. To do this, you have to get the long roots out of the earth as completely as possible. This is hardly possible with older plants.

How is daphne cut?

Cut daphne right after the blossom back by a third. Occasional taper cuts are advisable.

What diseases and pests do you need to watch out for?

The biggest problem is Verticillium wilt caused by fungus. The twigs wither even though the plant is moist enough. There is no remedy against it.

  • Tear out the daphne and its roots
  • Remove soil around the planting site
  • Dispose of the plant and soil with household waste
  • Under no circumstances should it be placed on top of the compost

Nudibranchs are found quite often on daphne. Collect them as quickly as possible.

Does daphne need winter protection?

Most varieties are absolutely hardy and do not require winter protection.

Tips

When cutting daphne flower branches as flower arrangements for vases, keep in mind that the Daphne toxins get into the flower water. Ensure that the vase water is disposed of carefully so that children do not get it or pets accidentally drink it.
