Sown dahlias are not always single-variety

The main disadvantage of sowing georgines is that you never know exactly what colors and shapes the plants will bloom. Pollination by insects and wind make them different sorts mixed with each other so that completely new breeds can arise.

Collect seeds

Dahlia seeds are ready to be harvested when the protective covering that surrounds them bursts. Now you should immediately start collecting the seed that you plan to sow next spring.

Let the seeds dry for three to four weeks in a warm place for several weeks, then fill them in small paper or parchment bags. Matchboxes are also suitable.

What to do with the sown dahlias in autumn?

Sown dahlias are usually kept for an annual period. If you do overwinter because the georgines have developed particularly beautiful flowers, dig up the tubers and preferably overwinter them in the cellar or in one of them other place.

Georgins that you do not want to continue cultivating because the flowers are not so beautiful or you simply do not have a suitable place to overwinter can be disposed of in the compost.

You can harvest particularly large quantities of germinable seeds from unfilled dahlias. It ripens best and produces vigorous plants with very different flowers in the next year.
