Multiplication by division

The storage organs of the Montbretie form abundant minor tubers that grow into large clumps over the years. Every three years or so, you should carefully dig them up and divide them up. This is also important to keep the montbretia blooming. Since the stolons of the Montbretia grow outwards and downwards, the plant in the middle of the cane becomes more and more rotten to flowering and there mainly leaves.

Since the heavily draining Montbreti should be implemented every three to four years anyway, this is it a good opportunity to remove the small tubers and also in a new location to use. They continue to grow rapidly there and often bloom in the same year.

Propagation by seeds

Sometimes the Montbreti plant seeds that you can use for propagation. For this to be successful, you should definitely harvest the seeds before the first frost. The ideal sowing date is from February, as the germinated plants can then move outdoors in the same year.

Method:

  • Let the seeds soak in lukewarm water for a few hours.
  • During this time, growing pots with special Potting soilthat is mixed with some sand.
  • Spread seeds and cover them with a very thin layer of the substrate if necessary. Montbretia are light germs!
  • Carefully moisten the soil with a sprayer so that the seeds are not washed away.
  • Put a transparent plastic bag over the pots to create a warm, humid greenhouse climate.

Put the pots in a bright, warm place and ventilate them daily to prevent mold and rot. It can take a few weeks for germination.

Tips

Montbretians also thrive in pots, as long as you give the plants a sufficiently large planter. With their stiffly upright leaves and the bright orange or red colored flowers, they are an attractive focal point of the balcony or terrace greening.
