Potassium strengthens winter hardiness - this is how it works
The field maple is not inherited from its robust frost hardness of up to - 40 degrees Celsius. Only in the course of the first years of standing does the winter hardiness gradually build up. Until then, give the shrub or tree a hand with a potassium-based fertilizer. The main nutrient in the cell water lowers the freezing point and strengthens the cell walls, so that freezing frost has fewer opportunities to attack. How to apply the fertilizer correctly:
- In autumn the root disc with compost mulch and with potassium-richer Comfrey manure shower over
- Alternatively, fertilize with Patentkali or Thomaskali in September

Regardless of whether they are organic or mineral-organic fertilize, should then be poured abundantly. This ensures that the field maple completely absorbs the nutrients it receives.
Cut back for a neat appearance - How to do it right
When the autumn color festival on the field maple draws to a close, the time window opens for a shape and maintenance cut. With the beginning of the sap dormancy, the deciduous wood can cope with pruning much better than in the middle of the growth phase. You can cut back Maßholder hedges and tree tops until late winter. Here are some things to look out for:
- Thoroughly thin out the shrub or crown beforehand
- Ideally, place intersections just above a leaf knot
- Trapezoidal hedges cut with a broad base and a narrow crown
If you have prescribed a rejuvenation cut for your field maple, you can start the measure in autumn and winter from 1. October to 28. Perform february. Outside of this time, trees may not be placed on the cane to protect the fauna.
Tips
Autumn is the ideal planting time for field maples. In October and November, the soil has deeply stored the heat of the sun, so that shrubs or trees take root quickly. During this time, tree nurseries and garden centers have inexpensive root products ready for you, which you can safely use until the first frost plants can.
