A multitude of different animals cavort in our houses. Insects in particular use the warmth and the good food available in the house for reproduction. This becomes visible when the maggots leave the egg-laying area in search of food kitchen, the closet or other areas. With us you will learn how to make a working maggot trap and how you can catch and kill the animals in other ways.

Maggot trap against maggots in the house

There are various ways of keeping the insects away from the start. So they cannot lay eggs in the first place, which then turn into the hated ones Maggots Hatch. Effective measures are, for example, fly screens, adhesive catchers or the use of deterrent scents by means of herb plants or fragrance lamps. Here, however, we want to deal with how we can catch and kill existing animals in a maggot trap.

The beer trap

Well-tried and known from various areas of pest control, the beer trap reliably helps against low to medium pollution with insect larvae:

  • Fill a flat container with beer and place it in the infected area
  • Killing the caterpillars by drowning in the beer
  • Empty and refill the container regularly, disinfecting it in order to prevent any pathogens in the animals

tip: Do not use containers made of stainless steel or very smooth glass as a maggot trap. It is true that the animals seem to get everywhere, the easier they can climb the outer wall of the vessel, the more likely they are to actually fall into the trap.

Permethrin

Permethrin is a chemical used to kill lice, mites, and other insects. It occurs, for example, in:

  • Dog shampoo
  • Special lice shampoo
  • Creams against mange

In order to be able to use the permethrin effectively to kill a maggot, the selected product is simply put into water and dissolved there. Now there are two ways to get rid of the annoying caterpillars:

  1. Spraying: Spray the created solution directly onto the animals using a spray bottle with a nebulizer and they will perish in a short time.
  2. Use in a trap: place some food in a frequently frequented area, for example an old apple stalk, and douse it with the permethrin solution. The animals ingest the poison with their food and usually die in the immediate vicinity of the food supply. So you can catch them, so to speak, with no escape route, and simply eliminate them.

Salt and silica

Both salt and silica change the osmotic balance as soon as it hits the caterpillar's skin. The animal dries up in a short time and dies from extreme dehydration. Used in a trap, the substances should be placed as a kind of bed under the attractant food so that the maggot has to crawl through and apply the substance itself to his skin and distributed. Alternatively, the animals can of course also be sprinkled directly with the fabrics.

Note: Salt even has a double effect as a trap for maggots. Food heavily sprinkled with salt can promote internal dehydration and also cause the caterpillars to perish.

Mothballs as a maggot trap

Mothballs are rarely used today, but they can also be very effective against a wide variety of maggots. Ultimately, they are balls treated with insecticides, which evaporate over time and create an atmosphere around them that is toxic to the animals. In order for this not to evaporate too quickly, the correct construction of the trap is important:

  • Place bait made from leftover food on plates
  • Place the mothball close to the bait
  • Invert the small bowl or bowl over the bait and mothball
  • Raise the edge of the bowl with a match or similar to create a passage for the caterpillars
  • Animals immigrate and perish in the “haze” of the mothball

Other chemicals

One reads again and again that other household chemicals from household cleaners to special engine cleaners are also highly effective against insect larvae. That may certainly be the case, but it will be yours Use in the house is explicitly discouraged. Most substances are classified as harmful to the environment and health and should not be presented openly on a permanent basis or even over a long period of time. Otherwise there is a risk that the maggot trap will simultaneously become a human or pet trap and cause unwanted damage to third parties.
