When are the first tubers ripe?

Everything is green and blooming in the potato bed, but how does it look in the earth? The tubers start growing in secret. We neither know how many there are under each plant, nor do we know what size they have already reached. The following is the interpretation of the visible signs:

Calculate harvest time

The Harvest time each new potato variety can be calculated. You need to know which variety you have planted in the bed and how long it will ripen.

Most New potato varieties take about 90 days for their bulbs to be large and edible. If you planted them by the end of March, you can start harvesting as early as June.

Harvest even earlier

When it comes to harvest maturity, the current weather plays a decisive role, because the warmer it is, the faster the potato plants grow. But while we cannot influence the weather, we have to

Harvest before maturity

New potatoes from the supermarket

Anyone who does not have their own garden or cannot patiently wait for the first edible tubers to be able to stock up on them in stores as early as May. However, many new potato varieties offered in the supermarket have come a long way, as they mostly come from warmer countries.

Tips

Plastic bags are not breathable and nets allow a lot of light to penetrate the tubers, which leads to the formation of toxic solanine. Reach out for new potatoes that are packed in paper bags.
