When dried, cress has hardly any aroma

Watercress is one of those herbs that can be badly dried or bad Freeze let keep.

As the leaves dry out, they lose their aroma with the water. The vitamins are lost, so that dried cress is no longer suitable as a seasoning herb.

Too much watercress in the garden?

Watercress becomes slightly higher than normal garden cress. Even so, drying is not necessarily the best way to preserve leaves.

If you want to give it a try, harvest the herbs in the morning when the leaves are completely dry. The proportion of essential oils is then the highest.

Cut the stems just above the ground and tie them together in small bundles. Hang them in an airy place out of direct sunlight.

Store dried cress safely

When the cress is completely dry, pluck the leaves from the stems and place them in an airtight jar made of brown or green glass.

Check the glass regularly to see if there is any Mould has formed.

Alternatives to drying watercress

  • Sow only a small amount of cress
  • Serve in a salad or quark
  • Cooking cress soup
  • Give it away to the neighbors

You can grow cress on the windowsill all year round or buy it in advance in the supermarket. It is therefore not worth drying cress.

If you are too much Harvested cress you can alternatively mix them with other fresh herbs and soak them in oil.

Or try a cress soup. For this you need a lot of fresh cabbage, which you can boil briefly in the liquid.

Do you have too much Nasturtiums sown, just let it grow until it develops flowers and later fruit clusters. As long as the fruits are still green, you can use them wonderfully as a substitute for capers. If the fruits are dry, sow them again the next year.
